Bhagwani Devi, who won gold medal in the 100m sprint event at the World Masters Athletics championships held in Finland, was on Tuesday accorded a grand welcome at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on her arrival here.


The 94-year-old athlete won 100m gold with a timing of 24.74 seconds in Tampere. She also bagged a bronze in Shot put event.


Her achievements were applauded across the nation.


Taking to Twitter, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said: "Age is no bar! Very inspiring! 94-year-old Bhagwani Devi from India stunned everyone by winning gold at the World Masters Athletics Championship in Tampere.100-meter sprint 24.74 seconds. A remarkable feat"


Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: "I congratulate Bhagwani Devi Ji who has won laurels for India at the World Masters Athletics Championships at 94. Her spirit and strength are an inspiration for all of us. India is proud of you, Bhagwani ji. Keep rising.


"The World At Her Feet! We are so proud of you Bhagwani Devi Dagar ji, for bagging medals for India... What an achievement at 94," Union Minister of Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs and Food & Public Distribution and TextilesPiyush Goyal tweeted.


The World Masters Athletics is a world championship caliber event for the sport of athletics (track and field) for male and female athletes aged 35 years and over.


This competition is open to all athletes, with no qualification standards, with the exception that athletes must be members of their respective national organizations.
