Sri Lankan Navy arrests 6 more Indian fishermen

Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu), (BIJ News) The Sri Lankan Navy arrested six Indian fishermen..


The Sri Lankan Navy arrested six Indian fishermen and impounded their mechanized fishing trawler allegedly for violating the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and unlawful poaching in their territorial waters on Saturday night.




Tamil Nadu fisheries officials said here on Sunday the fishermen identified as A. Ulaganathan (50), K. Aandi (58), V. Karunanidhi (46), A. Biyatli Sesu (37) and S. Susai Viyakulam (35) were apprehended by the Sri Lankan navy, when they were fishing allegedly in Sri Lankan waters off Talaimannar.




The arrested fishermen along with trawler were handed over to the Fisheries department officials at Mannar for onward legal action.




The Sri Lankan Navy on August 22 arrested 10 fishermen hailing from Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu and confiscated a mechanised fishing trawler on similar charges.




Protesting against the arrest of innocent fishermen by the Island nation, the Federation of All Mechanised Boats Fishermen Associations called for a one day strike on Monday. They were also demanding immediate and unconditional release of all the arrested fishermen.
